THEORETICAL DESIGN PROJECT: GRÖNA VAGNEN
In the beginning of 2020 I studied Design for sustainable development at Malmo University where I worked together with five others in a design project which was about improving the district, Sofielund, in Malmo. The focus was on social, economic and environmental development along with UN’s developmental goals. After researching and interviewing organisations and people living in the area we learned that there was a lack of a ”community feeling” along with a wish to focus on more green projects. We then started creating an idea from the needs we were presented, which would include as many people living in the area as possible.
That was when we created Gröna vagnen which was focused on the social and environmental development in the area. The idea was to provide Sofielund with a garden wagon including tools, small plants and ”good- to-know” tips from neighbors that would visit different gardens around the district to contribute to communal gardening. The project was supposed to be administrated by BID Sofielund in cooperation with Växtvärket which was going to provide the project with staff and physical movement of the wagon. My roll in the project was to design the logotype and the wagon, do basic research, SWOT-analysis, making sure that we followed UN’s developmental goals and to create the collaboration between BID Sofielund and Växtvärket.

THE LOGOTYPE
When designing the logotype I did different sketches, presented them to the other group members that voted on the best one. Then I finished it in Illustrator. We wanted it to be connected to the name and its purpose, which we think we managed to do.

THE WAGON
The design of the wagon is based on Move by bike, but with openings on the side instead of the back, with our logo printed on the sides.
SOCIAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY
By bringing people and neighbors together in a specific project as simple as gardening and socializing contributes to strengthening the community and the mental and physical health. Even the ”good-to-know” tips which anyone could write down and pass forward with the wagon contributes to the cohesion and ingroup feeling, which strengthens the community. Växtvärket also have a focus on children and a passion to learn them about gardening and the environment which also has a positive effect on the socialization amongst the younger generation.
THOUGHTS ABOUT THE PROJECT
It is both positive and important to work towards social, economic and environmental development even though it sometimes can be hard to get all three of them to gain from each other. We fought with getting the project to work financially but solved it when the collaboration with BID and Växtvärket happened since they told us they could finance it. The best part of the project was to create something out of what was missing in the area, with a small amount of tools, that could make a difference for the community.
